Guidelines for When Your Child is Sick

When your child is sick….

If your child has any of the following symptoms that indicates a possible illness, it may decrease the student’s ability to learn and put them at risk for spreading illness to others. If your child has any of these symptoms, they need to stay home.
• Temperature 100°F or higher when taken by mouth
• Sore throat
• New uncontrolled cough that cause difficulty breathing (for students with chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline
• Diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain
• New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever

If your child becomes sick at school…

The school will follow the following guidelines for ill students:
• Fever of 100°F or higher, unexplained diarrhea or vomting will require the student to be sent home. These students are not to return to school until the symptoms are gone for at least 24 hours WITHOUT the use of medication.
• One or two symptoms of the common cold/allergies such as chills, muscle pain, sore throat, sinus congestion, runny nose will require the student to be sent home for 48 hours. If symptoms improve, the student may return after this time. If symptoms worsen, contact their health care provider for further evaluation and diagnosis or they will need to self-isolate for 14 days from the onset of the first symptom.
