SENIORS

"NEW FAFSA DEADLINE" Is FEBRUARY 1st, 2017!! You may start applying Oct 1st using last years tax information!! 

Don't forget after applying online to Colleges, to fill out a Transcript Request Form in the Guidance Office and give it to a counselor or Mrs. Smucker.  Your college application is NOT complete until we mail your transcript!  Your transcript will be mailed within 2 days of your request.   Please allow 10 weeks before the college process is completed.  We will send updated transcripts after 1st semester, per your request.  For any student needing help with filling out applications online...Mrs. Hamsher is available throughout the afternoon to walk you through the process.  Please bring your social security number and a credit card if you plan on completing the application process at school!  Final Official Transcripts will be mailed to the college or university of your choice and to NCAA Clearinghouse after graduation.

GPA CONVERSION INFORMATION:  Many colleges ask for, or may want you to report your GPA on a 4.0 Scale.  Attached are links to help you with this process.  Go to: http://www.collegeboard.com/html/academicTracker-howtoconvert.html  or  www.gpacalculator.net  (This helps convert your GPA from a 5.00 to a 4.00 scale).  

Scholarships/Seniors:  See below for random scholarships that come in to the high school.  Also, you can check online at the Wayne County Community Foundation of Wooster to see if they have the Orrville and Wayne County scholarships updated for the 2016-17 school year.  You can get a head start by printing off applications, or applying to some of them online.  It's a good idea to ask for your Letters of Recommendation now so you can complete your applications, and be ready for the ones you receive in February.  

A SENIOR MEETING for "LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS" will be held Thursday, February 16th, 2017 at 7:30 AM in the New Gym.  All high school & career center seniors who are interested in applying for local scholarships must attend.  An important information packet will be handed out at this time.  Also, a bus will be provided for career center students to return to the WCSCC.

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE REMINDER!! Seniors planning on playing college sports need to check out the following requirements at the NCAA Clearinghouse Website.  Make sure you have the required Core Courses in high school to be qualified.  Talk with your coach, athletic director and counselor if you have further questions!

UPWARD BOUND:  Thinking about college?  Don't know how to get there? Upward Bound is a program which helps eligible students prpare for and then succeed in college.  Who is eligible?  Students who want to continue their education beyond high school and who have financial needs and/or are living with parents who do not have a bachelor's degree.  Ohio State ATI Upward Bound serves students at 4 high schools in the area.  For more information, OHS students can contact Mrs. Berry at the high school, or pick up a brochure in the Guidance Office.

Abbott & Fenner Scholarships:  Abbott & Fenner Business Solutions is once again be awarding $1,000 scholarships.  To apply you must submit an essay on the topic that appears on the scholarship page on their web site at:  http://www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm.  Full details will be on this site.  Deadline for applying is June 12th, 2017.  This is a renewable scholarship.

AULTMAN VolunTeen Program for High School Students:  Aultman Orrville Hospital offers an opportunity for high school students to volunteer over the summer months during their school break.  This program runs 10 weeks and students are assigned to volunteer ositions throughout the hospital.  This is a first-come, first-serve basis.  Applications are now available in the OHS Guidance Office.  Students must be at least 16 years of age and have completed the 9th grade to apply.  Deadline for applying is Friday, May 12th, 2017.  Any questions, please contact: Oma Marks, Community Relations @ 330.684.4703.

Baker College, Flint, MI:  There are many scholarships worth up to $24,000 for students enrolling in Baker College.  Students attending Culinary Institute of Michigan and Auto/Diesel Institute of Michigan are also eligible to apply for these scholarships.  All completed applications must be received by the Baker College Scholarship Committee no later than May 1st, but the sooner the better.

BGSU will award approximately 30 scholarships ranging up to $5,000 to incoming freshmen.  Check out "THE HATCH" at BGSU!  If you are familiar with the popular TV show, "Shark Tank", this is a similar event!  Each spring BGSU hosts "The Hatch" for students to pitch business ideas to a panel of investors hoping to fund their businesses.  The College of Business has taken this best in class practice event and created a 5-day entrepreneurship curriculum for H.S. classrooms. Cleveland Institute of Art:  At CIA, they offer 15 majors in art and design, taught by highly accomplished practicing artists and designers in modern, well-equipped studio spaces, and possible internships for 80% of the upper class students. Denison University:  If you are planning to attend Denison, and major in math or science, you may apply for the Austin E. Knowlton Scholarship by applying to this college. FARM CREDIT Mid-America Scholarship:  $1,000 College Scholarships will be offered to the children and grandchildren of customers.  The scholarships will be awarded based on academic record, leadership qualities and community involvement.  Education is one way to make a difference in our rural communities and agriculture.  The scholarship application can be accessed online at: e-farmcredit.com (click on Community, then Scholarships).  Deadline is the last day of January, and scholarship awards will be awarded in June.

Hiram College:  Hiram is sponsoring The Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature Writing Contest for current 10th and 11th grade.  Students must submit a nonfiction essay to the Emerging Writers Nonfiction Contest.  The theme is Community!  They seek nonfiction that is reflective, investigative, immersive or meditative.  Essays should combine a foundation in facts with nuanced use of language and detail.  For more information and guidelines go to:  www.hiram.edu/emergingwriterscontest.  Deadline is: Friday, January 6th, 2017 by 5 PM.

J.F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest:  The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to honor the 100th anniversary of JFK's birth by participating in the 2017 Profile in Courage Essay Contest.  In Profiles in Courage, John F. Kennedy recounted the stories of eight U.S. senators who demonstrated political courage by risking their careers to do what was right for the nation.  The Profile in Courage Essay Contest challenges U.S. high school students to write a new profile in courage describing and analyzing an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year of JFK's birth.  For contest information, registration, and to submit your essay, visit the Profile in Courage Essay Contest at JFKLibrary.org/essaycontest.  First-place prize is $20,000; 2nd-place is $1,000, Five finalists receive $500 each, and Eighteen Centennial awards of $100 each.  Deadline for submission:  January 4th, 2017

Ohio Oil & Gas Energy Education Program/Foundation - 2017 Scholarship Opportunities for Students:  The scholarship application can be downloaded from their website at: www.oogeep.org.  There are more than 75 different unique career opportunities for your students to consider if they have a desire to work in this energy industry.  Ohio's crude oil and natural gas industry wants to continue to recognize the importance of providing financial assistance to those young men and woment who chose a path that can lead to a very exciting and rewarding career!  Last year 50 scholrships were awarded. Complete applications between December 1st, 2016 and March 1st, 2017.  Once awarded, this scholarship can be renewed up to four years, and is available to any student pursuing a 4-year or 2-year degree.  Applications are also available in the OHS Guidance Office.

Ohio Veterinary Exploration Conference & College Fair:  Saturday, February 25th, 2017 at Hyatt Regency Columbus, at 10 - 4:00 P.M.  This program exposes numerous students to available careers in veterinary medicine that might otherwise have been a mystery.  There is a registration fee of $10 per student and is open to high school juniors and seniors and undergraduate students.  Check-in begins at 9:00 AM.  Register at: http://mvcinfo.org/students/VEC.html.  Deadline to register is Sunday, February 19th, 2017. 

The 2017 Orrville Community Chorus - Victor Gerber Memorial Music Scholarship:  Application forms are now available in the Guidance Office for eligible students interested in applying for this $1000 scholarship.  Wayne County seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, participation in music activities, and leadership, and who will begin post-secondary education in the fall of 2017 may apply.  Deadline for this scholarship is March 31st, 2017.

Slater & Zurz LLP, Attourneys & Counselors At Law:  To increase support and advancement of community, they are offering a $1,000 scholarship.  To be eligible, a student must be a high school senior who will graduate in 2017, and will be attending a college or university in Ohio.  The application process will be conducted online via the following link:  https://slaterzurz.com/scholarship/.  This scholarship is not being tied directly to a student's GPA, ACTscores, or Class Rank.  Rather, it will be reviewed and awarded based on the preparation of a "brief" YouTube video along with an accompanying written essay.  There are two options for the Topic of their YouTube video:  1) address an existing law in the State of Ohio that needs to be changed and then tell why the change is necessary.  2) the student creates a new law that would benefit the community and then tell how that new law will impact the community and why that impact is important.  Students are encourged to be creative, logical, and persuasive in support of their topic with both video and written essay.  Video submissions should range between 2 and 4 minutes and written essays should be between 500 and 1,000 words.  All applications must be submitted no later than March 31st, 2017.  The recipient will be notified no later than May 19th, 2017.  If you have any further questions, please contact Aaron Meikle directly via email at: ameikle@slaterzurz.com.  

Student Insights/ Student-View Scholarship Program:  Log on to: www.student-view.com and complete a 15-20 minute application survey about colleges in your area.  Deadline is April 22nd, 2017.  One $4,000, two $1,000, and ten $500 scholarships will be awarded.  No essay, application form, or fees required.

Wayne County Committee for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc:  The WCCCCA is once again offering scholarships to those young adults with physical handicaps who wish to continue their education in college or technical school. This program provides scholarships for each academic year a recipient if in school up to four years. The amount of the scholarship is $1,000/1st year; $1,500/following three years. The deadline for applying is June 1st, 2017.  An application is available in the OHS guidance office.

Wayne County Schools Career Center - Adult Education Scholarship:  Seniors can start a full-time career just 1 year after graduation.  Wheather you're thinking of a career in health care, welding, machining, law enforcement, automotive technology, or office administration, the Adult Education programs at Wayne County Schools Career Center could be a perfect fit for you!  From now through April 15th, the Career Center is taking applications for their $1,000 Star Scholarship.  See the OHS Guidance office for an application.

William D. Squires Scholarship Foundation:  15 - $3,000/yr Scholarships will be offered to Ohio seniors who apply through this foundation.  Applicants must have a 3.2 GPA or above & already know their career goal; must be have good character and be highly motivated; applicants must show academic promise and have financial need.  Apply on-line between February 15th through April 5th, 2017 at: www.wmdsquiresfoundation.org  This is a renewable scholarship.
